How do I get started with a costume?

Would you like to make a costume for Pixie Fest too?
But not sure where to start? You're not alone.

Over the past few years, the Pixie Team has heard the same comment more and more often: "I wish I could make a costume like that!" 🧚 That simple remark got us thinking. And when we saw the results of our social media poll, we knew for sure: this was something we wanted to do something about.

Many people dream of creating their own costume, but feel overwhelmed by all the incredible creations they see at festivals and on social media. It's easy to get lost in the endless inspiration and not know where to begin.

We completely understand. Large, elaborate costumes can be absolutely breathtaking, and it's only natural to wonder, "How do people even make something like that?"

The good news? A beautiful costume doesn't have to be complicated. All you need is a fun idea, a little creativity, and the courage to simply get started. 💜 After all, every amazing costume once began with a single step and a handful of simple materials.

So how can we help you take that first step? The Pixie Team teamed up with two passionate costume makers who are excited to share everything they know: Meomi and Minerva.

Every Beautiful Costume Has to Start Somewhere

Meomi and Minerva are two costume makers who are well known in the fantasy community for their stunning creations. But did you know that with every new costume, they still have to figure things out from scratch?

Neither Meomi nor Minerva has a formal education in fashion or costume design. They both started with one simple approach: just give it a try.

Ask Minerva how she makes a costume, and she'll laugh and say, "Honestly? I don't really know either. I just figure it out as I go."

"Whenever I'm making a costume, I often run into things I have no idea how to create. Then I start thinking of different ways to make it work anyway. That's how I've taught myself new techniques over the years. I've learned how to sew, alter patterns, work with leather, and even weld so I could build sturdy wings for a costume."

Meomi started in much the same way. Many of her costumes began as simple cut-and-paste projects that gradually evolved into breathtaking fantasy creations. She also taught herself how to use a sewing machine and work with EVA foam, simply by experimenting and not being afraid to try.

On one thing, Meomi and Minerva completely agree: don't be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes a piece ends up in the bin, and you have to start all over again. That's simply part of the process. In fact, those mistakes are often your greatest teachers.

Tips & Tricks
